Sneak Peek...Niki and Sean

Niki and Sean are absolutely fun and fabulous. I knew we were going to have fun when we first met, Niki has this fire red hair and a funky style about her. Niki and Sean booked me before their venue so we did a lot of , "are you open this day? well how about this day, this place has this day open, can you do it?" They finally settled on the Waterworks Restaurant for their 40 person intimate wedding. It was so freezing and blustery that day that we decided to go down to the Water Works Interpretive Center for their portraits. As soon as Niki saw the space, she turned on her top model and gave me a ton to work with. Here is just a sneak peek of the fun, moody images we captured. I love getting to know my couples because I get so inspired by them that the images always look different and they always capture their personalities perfectly.

Of course, the awesome bouquet was done by the lovely Hope and Donna from H&D Designs. More images to come!

Amy and Keith, The Fuel House

Amy and Keith were a great couple. They were so laid back and just willing to do anything. They were also pretty hilarious. I had so much fun capturing their day. They did a Thursday wedding with plenty of time for pics around town and then a cocktail reception with lots of passed plates, tapas and dancing. I also had a great time working with Kris Summey from EventFX Productions, Feastivities Catering, Karen Pecora with her day of services that kept us all in line, Kim Alexander from No Macarena who played awesome music all night long and the fabulous FUEL House. Special thanks to Ryan Estes for second shooting with me. It is always fabulous to shoot with a friend and fellow fabo photographer.

Marisa and Greg at the beach

You may remember Marisa and Greg from their first Get to Know You session. They really wanted to do a beach session since they spent many years in Cape May. Greg was a lifeguard there and Marisa would go and visit him every weekend. We had such fun, visiting their old living quarters, stopping for some famous dogs and then hitting the beach. They enjoyed the crashing waves, the sounds of the seagulls and the warm sand on their toes. Marisa and Greg are gorgeous inside and out and I am so glad we spent the day at the beach, it was perfect.

Greg lifeguarded for a few years and so we went to the guest house he lived at with a bunch of guys. Marisa would visit on the weekends.

Kristie and Dan, Cairnwood

You may remember Kristie and Dan's GTKY session at Citizen's Bank Park. Go Phillies!

They were married a few weeks ago at Cairnwood Estate, one of my favorite places to to do a wedding. Kristie and Dan are so much fun and I have had a great time getting to know the two of them. They compliment each other so well and make each other laugh like crazy. Kristie also had the most beautiful bridesmaid dresses and flowers ever. Beautiful Blooms did the flowers and she created a bouquet for each girl. Fabulous!! She also did stations by the ever so creative and tasty Feastivities and Meryl, the owner, was on hand to make sure it went off perfectly. I really like the station idea because everyone can eat when they want and are forced to get up and mingle.

SoleMates- a walk in the park

This time of year with all the rain, snow and frost; the grass gets soft, wet and muddy. However, brides still love to go out and get photos with all the beautiful fall colors in the park. Now, there is solemates. They are these cool little things that fit right over the heel of your shoe so you don't sink. No more getting stuck in the ground, aerating the lawn or mud being tracked all over the place. If you get some, let me now how you like them.

Amy and Keith were married last Thursday and we did their GTKY session last Saturday. They were quick planners and of course had the help of the ever fabulous Kris Summey of EventFX Productions. Amy and Keith have this matter of fact sense of humor and had me laughing the whole time. They also are very warm and generous and made me feel like an old friend. We met at Reading Terminal for tea and then a quick session followed by a yummy dinner at Vietnam. I really loved spending time with the two of them.

Kelly and Tumoor are fabulous people. From the moment I met Kelly, I knew I wanted to capture her wedding. We met for 2.5 hours and I felt like we had known each other for years. Then I met Tumoor at the GTKY session. I saw instantly why Kelly was madly in love with him. Tumoor is madly in love with Kelly, he's generous, kind and I think if someone asked he'd give you the shirt off his back. I love them both! They along with their families made me feel welcome and one of their own. I never ate so much food and laughed so hard at a wedding before.

Thank you for having me share in your life and I hope this will be one of many events and milestones that I will capture.

I love seeing two people in love. The looks, the touch, the glow that comes over them.

This is a montage from Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DiRossi's wedding. The love and admiration is so evident. How can anyone deny people who love each other the one thing that legally declares to the world their relationship? This is the love I want to capture between my couples every time I see them.

Some days I have to turn off NPR because I can't take the state of affairs. Debate after debate, interview after interview, my choice is clear but there are some people who have not even taken the time to register to vote. Voting is a huge way to be heard, don't allow others to make your choices. Voting is the way to make a change and take control of the current situation. So much is at stake! I am biting my nails until the election and depending on the outcome, Canada may be getting a new wedding photographer and a jazz guitarist.

I found this video made by Leonardo DiCaprio after Ellen had talked about it on her site. It is fabulous!

October is family month

Fall is here! I love Summer but Fall is a close favorite. The smell of apples and cinnamon, pumpkins, leaves changing colors and my birthday. heehee had to slip that in.

So for the month of October, all family, kid and maternity shoots during the week are $200.00. Yes, you heard right! These will be on-location, one hour sessions. I will also have mini-portrait sessions at area businesses so stay tuned for those announcements.

Want an excuse for a get together? Grab your friends and schedule mini sessions for all of you. These will be 15 minutes for each kid and then a 30 minute free for all. Must have at least 4 kids and they start at $75.00 for each kiddo.

Kristie and Dan - GTKY at Citizen's Bank Park

I love Kristie and Dan. They are so much fun! Dan and Kristie were in heaven getting to run around Citizen's Bank Park all day. Dan had so many fun ideas. Dan was really into the whole shoot, asking if he could pretend to be a coach and stand like the coaches do or call Kristie on the bullpen phones. Kristie just laughed and went along with everything. There was so much friendship and love between them, I can't wait for the wedding this Saturday!

Jennifer and Andrew, The Lake House inn

I think I mentioned a hundred times that I love the Lake House Inn. It is such a gorgoeus venue and the ballroom is very customizable. A few weeks ago, I captured Jennifer and Andrew's wedding. Jennifer and Andrew did a traditional jewish ceremony with the Kabbalat Panim, Badekan and Ketubah signing followed by the ceremony, photos and lots of partying. I loved the horah and the other festivities. It was a really beautiful day full of love, tradition and fun.

Caroline and Adam- Cairnwood

Here is the third part that is the trilogy of Caroline and Adam! Caroline and Adam had a gorgeous Sunday. The weather, the light and the energy was perfect. Their friends and family were so open and generous.

Getting ready with her mom and sisters. They were all so excited and burst out laughing when mom had to reach way up her dress to pull down the lining! There was also something else super funny going on that Caroline would probably kill me if I mentioned. (Do you girls remember?)

Beautiful!

Caroline and Adam gave us all the time in the world and we created some beautiful and intimate portraits of the two of them.

The ceremony was beautiful in the side garden. Caroline started crying during the vows and everyone joined suit, even me.

But then Caroline couldn't speak and started laughing. I love those moments.

The love between these two families is magnificent. I love the tears in Adam's dad's eyes as he embraces his new daughter.

The tent at Cairnwood looked very simple and elegant with chocolate brown tables and single white orchids.

Working Moms vs Stay at Home Moms??

I try to avoid to many political discussions especially with people I don't know. But I am really appalled that people are questioning whether she can be VP since she has 5 children, one of them being a newborn with special needs. The pundits gave Hilary a h*ll of a time when she was running and I was ticked by the "get back in the kitchen" type comments too. What would this race look like if we questioned her policies, what she stands for and what a McCain-Palin ticket really means for this country? I am more interested in seeing the debate between Biden and Palin when she actually has to be able to discuss issues and policies and not just read someone else's words.

Being a working mom and business owner, I do understand all to well the struggles related to having kids and a business. I have inner struggles because there are days I think I should be spending time with her when I am working and think of work while with her. Yes, sometimes I feel guilty because I have 4 shoots in a week and I only have time to get her ready in the morning and peek in on her dreaming face at night.

However, my husband struggles with the same thing. He tries to make room in his schedule for her and feels guilty when he can't. I think all parents deal with these issues.

I wonder, is this guilt truly our own or brought on by society? My daughter thrives with us but I also think she thrives in school: making friends, learning to share and listen to others, discovering her own personality in the world.

I love what I do. I love my clients and I love photography. I love creating lasting moments in time for their lives and sharing in them. I also love my child. I love creating moments with her and seeing her discover new things. I don't think I would be able to enjoy her fully if I didn't create things for myself. How will I teach her that she can do anything she wants, if I am forced, by society, to conform and give up a part of myself. Yes, it would be giving up a huge part of who I am.

Some moms discover themselves through their children and feel a strong desire to be with them all the time. Their passion is their children. Me, like so many working moms choose to give their children a mom who has a passion for both their children and their work. Some call it being selfish but I call it being true to yourself and your child. My parents both worked and I turned out great. There are many people in the world that succeed in life and have working mothers. The key is that I still had a strong support system at home.

None of this really seems necessary in this race for the White House. But since it is an issue, maybe the question isn't, "How could she do this to her children?", "How could she be so selfish?", "Will she be able to handle it?" but "Will her husband be stepping in and making time for the kids?", "How much time will he be spending with them?", "Will they find great caregivers when they are both working?", "Will the children be in good schools so they can succeed in life?", "Will McCain make quality time with his family?", "Will they instill strong values and a good support system so their children can make their own decisions?", "Will Sarah and her husband teach their children integrity and cleaning up things when they have lost that integrity and living with the consequences of their own actions?"

Sarah's personal questions may be: "Can I handle the guilt that will be laid on me by society and my own desires to spend time with my children and be true to myself?", "Will I be able to really spend time with them when it is their time?" Each day Sarah and her family will have to honor her word to her family to be with them during family time and her word to serve the country when it is country time. It will not be perfect everyday.

Does anyone ask McCain how he is going to handle being president and father his kids? Does anyone consider that there are many kids in this nation that have troubles because they have no father in their lives? No parents in their lives? No strong caregiver in their lives?

What could this race be like if all we cared about was the integrity of each candidate and the integrity of their policies?

How would parents be if they could have the freedom to create a family that works for everyone in that family? No matter what it looks like. How would our future society look like if our kids grow up in these families, all different but with one common theme: love, integrity and support?

I love my couples

My couples rock! They are beautiful inside and out. I love when I meet with a couple and we click right away. I know that I get to spend the next year or so getting to know two amazing people and their family and friends. I really take the time to see what makes them tick, see what they love, what they hate, what they can't live without. By the time I get to the wedding we are friends. We share a bond that comes through in the photos. A comfort level that can only be achieved if you trust your photographer wholeheartedly, trust them with one of the most important days of your life.

I am reminded of this every time I get an email from a client, here are a few in the past weeks.

Again, Sofia, thank you so much for your professionalism, creativity and fabulous personality throughout the entire process. Photography was the most important wedding necessity to me and you delivered! We have beautiful memories that will last a lifetime -- you truly have a gift when capturing emotion. You have a tremendous talent and we are lucky to have found you!!

I have to tell you that while I am so excited to see everything, it is sad in a way. The albums were the last thing we were waiting for and the fact that this was the last wedding related thing is a little weird.

But, we will definitely contact you when we have children -- I must have gorgeous photos of our kids!

Jeff and I wanted to thank you again for our get to know you session. Thank you for meeting us on a Saturday! We actually had a great time. It was a different and fun way to spend the afternoon. I kinda felt like a movie star! Sofia, I wanted to also say that I continue to be impressed with your generous personality. Thank you for taking us out to brunch...it was as great way to begin the shoot. And, thank you so much for the gift. The gift was very, very thoughtful! The dogs enjoyed some of their treats once we got back to our house. We will save the others and the gift certificate for another day (maybe something fancy for the wedding day!). Caroline and Adam- Indian Ceremony

Here is a sneak peek of their Indian Ceremony. Caroline and Adam did a shortened ceremony and then a rehearsal dinner of sorts. I absolutely love all the traditions involved and the deep meaning of each ceremonial element. It is also a welcome change from the everyday traditional american wedding ceremony.

After the ceremony I was invited to stay for dinner. I think I had one of the best times ever. Their families and friends were so warm and open. I bonded with aunts, uncles, cousins even the friend who introduced these two. This is one reason I love my job: bonding with people and really getting an inside look into their lives and what is important to them.

Her entire family was so excited to see me on Sunday. We were like old friends!

Caroline and Adam- GTKY session

A few weeks ago, I met up with Caroline and Adam for their GTKY session. These sessions are my favorite by far. We hang out and get to know each other, play for a couple hours, get great photos and then go out for drinks and dinner.

Caroline and Adam love being homebodies and play board games. They also told me they love Trader Joe's and running errands together. After spending time with them, I see why they have so much fun doing what seem like mundane things. They just absolutely love each other and enjoy each other's company.

So we ran around their neighborhood, got thrown out of Trader Joe's and avoided playing Sorry. I might be able to talk them into a board game tournament shoot when they get back.

Bonnie and Aatosh, Lakehouse Inn

Bonnie and Aatosh came to me and I immediately knew I wanted to capture their day. Aatosh and I spoke for about an hour on the phone when he first inquired. We hit it off right off the bat. Bonnie and Aatosh worked together and when they first met, they hated each other. Bonnie dreaded having to talk to him and work with him on projects. She complained to her friends all the time. Then they all went out one night and it hit them, they were like two peas in a pod. From that moment on, they were inseparable. Of course, it took them a bit to acknowledge this because they were supposed to hate each other. =)

Bonnie and Aatosh had a super fun wedding at the Lakehouse. Everything was so personal. They love to see concerts and each table had a concert ticket with a little story behind it. They also named each table with one of their favorite bands. Their friends were wild, we had a great time.

I love The Lakehouse Inn. It is a gorgeous venue contemporary, modern, sleek but very romantic. Right on the water, you can get married at sunset or watch the sunset during the first dance. The tent is exquisite with a beautiful wrought iron chandelier and such an empty palate that you can do anything you want to it. Of course, Glenn and his wife, the owners, are two very fabulous people and wonderful to work with.

Ace of Cakes comes to the G lounge

I have been sitting on this for months now because i had to wait for the show to air.
Do you watch Ace of Cakes? Its the reality show of this bakery in Baltimore which employs artists and rockers. I am not sure if anyone but the owner has any formal pastry training. But they do these amazing cakes. A few months ago, I got to watch and photograph the assembly of a cake made to look like the new Comcast Building. It was pretty nerve racking because there were lots of things that happened to the cake on their journey from Baltimore.

Jennifer and Jeff - Appleford Estate

I have loved working with Jennifer and Jeff. They have been one of my favorite couples this year. Jennifer is absolutely stunning and I really loved how beautiful and summery her wedding was.

Jennifer had stations set up with "make your own" quesadillas, chinese food, vegetarian options and beef. The food was so yummy! Kyra from Offshoots did a beautiful job with the flowers. Leila Miller and her crew from Feastivites did an amazing job with the food and made sure everything ran smoothly. Right before the ceremony, a big rainstorm came through with guests fleeing for cover. Leila and her crew ran out to help guests and pull the music in side. After a 30 minute delay, the sun came out and they did a great job of drying the chairs and getting all the guests outside and comfortable. The rest of the day went off without a hitch. A little hot and sticky but so gorgeous.

A few weeks ago, I went out with a great singer songwriter, Tim McGlone. When I listened to Tim's music, I heard these upbeat songs but they were all about angst and longing. So I dragged him down to one of my favorite spots where one can be isolated and look like they are really looking for something.

Keep an eye on him because he just opened for ColdPlay at the Wachovia Center.

A friend of mine has a fab friend that entered a music video contest with a grand prize of being the opener for the Coldplay concert here in Philly. Kelly and Tumoor, GTKY Session

When I met Kelly, we met for about 2.5 hours. We got along so well and she had told me so much about Tumoor, I couldn't wait to meet him. They both worked in the restaurant business and we found that we knew a lot of the same people. We met downtown at Rouge and I tried to drag them to restaurants but they said no way! Tumoor was hilarious because Kelly went to the bathroom and he said, "Now do I have to wake up at 6AM on the wedding day? and do I have to spend all day posing today?" I said, "Absolutely not, I'll see you around noon on the day of and right now you are going to spend the next 2 hours making out with Kelly" He said, I don't take very good photos. Not a problem!, I said.

2 hours later- Tumoor just kept saying, I love Sofia, I can't wait for the wedding!

Loughlin and Brian

I love capturing kids because you have to be so quick and on top of everything. These two were no different. Loughlin and Brian are two beautiful kids whose parents are just as cool and beautiful as they are. Jen called me after seeing the photos I took of Gray. Loughlin and Brian are super smart and I was amazed at how well they treated each other. Even after the shoot they ran off together for an hour while Jen, Patrick and I sat and had a beer.

Toni and Brian had a gorgeous wedding despite the rain. I had never met Brian prior to the wedding day so it was kind of funny walking up after the ceremony and having him introduce himself. In fact when all the guys came out, I was not sure which one he was until the guys started walking up to walk the girls down the aisle. And then I realized he was the one with the gihugeic smile on his face. I think Brian could not stop smiling all day. Usually we always do a "Get to Know You" Session before the big day but Toni was so swamped with work. However, we are going to do a fabulous session with their brand new puppy pug when they return from their honeymoon.

I absolutely loved Toni's hairdo and dress, it complimented her so well. She looked so modern but so Audrey Hepburn classic. She was so stunning and one of the sweetest brides ever.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was Toni's toes. She had painted Brian and the date on her toenails. I love it! She is so awesome.

The girls were having such a good time during formals- I love this shot that Misty grabbed while I was busy taking the formal picture for mom.

What a hottie! Toni and I were laughing because Brian was being Mr. GQ and posing like mad. Toni looks amazing too.

Katie and Matt are such a sweet couple. We had a great time earlier this winter ice skating and running around Northern Liberties. this time we hit the streets of Center City for some fun in back alleyways and of course Rittenhouse Square.

I aboslutely love her dad's expression when he first saw Katie!

Katie looks angelic walking down the aisle. I loved the light and the serendipity of a guest firing their point and shoot camera at this exact moment.

I love this moment when one of the groomsman put his hand on Katie's dad's shoulder as he walked back to his seat after giving her away. I love dad's look on his face too. These are the kind of moments that make me love being a wedding photographer.

We had to get a little goofy in the square.

We are training a new studio manager and we hope she will be plowing full steam ahead in the next few weeks. in the meantime, enjoy this video and I promise I will be posting a ton of weddings, gtky sessions and fun events.

The other night was huge industry wide party at Feastivities. One of my most fabulous caterer friends. They have amazing food and their space is awesome. I'd hire them just so I could go sit in one of their fabulous tasting rooms and watch all my food prepared in the immaculate kitchen.

Anyway, they had an old school photobooth and ryan estes, shea roggio and I jumped in for some pics. Unfortunately, Shea didn't make it in the images. sorry =(

$30,000.00 Photo

I photographed $30K the other day in the studio. $30K in diamonds that is. I do a lot of event work for Govberg Jewelers and they asked if I could capture a diamond necklace they will be using in some ads for a charity they sponsor. I rarely ever do studio work because I love interacting with people and finding new and interesting places to shoot.

However, this shoot was very exciting. We plugged in some studio lights, turned them on and poof! a spark and a smell and we couldn't use one of the lights and power packs. So , power pack number 2. A spark and a stinky smell. Out came power pack #3 and voila! It worked. of course, laying on the side of the studio was 2 power packs, 3 heads, a bunch of cables and a nice stinky smell. But the necklace didn't mind.

Photographers: Always make sure you have plenty of equipment, just in case.
Clients: If you hire a great photographer they will always be prepared.

Marisa and Greg- Get to Know You Session

Marisa and Greg were so much fun. Greg was laughing the whole time because Marisa and I are so much alike. We were both dancers. Love to walk really fast. We ate the exact same thing for lunch and we laughed at the same things.

Marisa and Greg are not getting married until next May but since Greg is in medical school and doing his residency, he has absolutely no time to do anything. Let alone take a beautiful afternoon and do photos. They really wanted to do a beach session because they love the beach. Since they are still a year away, I think I can coax them into another shoot. I'd love to do a fun beach shoot.

Jennifer and Jeff, Art Museum area

At the beginning of May, I met up with Jennifer and Jeff for their GTKY session. We had such a good time. We met up for lunch at Rembrandt's and then wandered all around the art museum area. We even wandered over the the Waterworks but because we did not have a permit, we were kicked off the grounds. The security guard said that we could not photograph anywhere owned by Fairmount Park, including West River Drive, Kelly Drive, the Art Museum even Falls bridge. So after that bit of excitement, we went back up Fairmount and found little alleyways and date spots. Even though we were not allowed, we took our chances with the dogs and shot at Lemon Hill. I can't wait for their wedding in june!

So a few weeks ago, i took a departure from my usual subject and photographed a bunch of food for a great caterer. If you are ever in Jenkintown, go to Joshua's Cafe and have lunch and then schedule with the chef, David, for your next wedding or party. All the food is super yummy. A huge thanks to the fabulous gals, Hope and Donna from H&D Design. They did all the styling for this shoot. Just between you and me, give me a person to photograph anyday. Food is way to quiet. =)

MANNA ChefAid 2008 Rittenhouse Hotel

For you loyal blog readers, you know that I do a lot of stuff for MANNA. MANNA holds a dear place in my heart because of the people who work there, the events that they have (shut up and dance is one of my most favorites) and because of the work they do. They started out delivering nourishment to homebound AIDS patients and have expanded to serve all homebound people with life threatening illnesses, such as cancer, AIDS, liver disease etc. Their mission is to deliver nourishment to the body and soul. The work there is just amazing.

Every year they hold ChefAid an event that has some of the top area chefs donating their time, skills and food for a fabulous fundraising feast. 5 courses, fabulous decor, a happening band and good times. This year they raised over $100,000!

Of course the ever fantabulous Evantine did the decor at the gorgeous Rittenhouse Hotel. EBE did the entertainment. and a huge thank you to my friend Geoff Horowitz for coming out and shooting with me. He did the beautiful photo of the singer, the waiters and the closeup of the flowers.

FRESH 2008 ISES Philadelphia

In March- yeah I am that far behind in blog posting- I photographed an annual event that ISES Philadelphia has done the past three years. It is a great industry trade show where a lot of the area's suppliers, caterers, planners, florists, designers and entertainment come together and showcase their wares. They show off new ideas, the latest trends and their great food. It is a lot of fun to see what people come up with.

The fabulous H&D design and Culinary Concepts teamed up in a pod of yellow lemons, butterflies and naked statues. =)

Megan and Matt at Glenfoerd - the slideshow!

As Megan arrived she was checking everything out, she got dressed 45 minutes early; because she had to have something to do. So I had time to play with her and make some stunning photos. The only way Megan could stay relaxed was to check on every detail. The day was perfect!

Matt was relaxed and giddy. Matt agreed to anything I asked and he had a good time all night. I loved some of those dance moves!

Megan and Matt kept referring to the ceremony as the drive-by wedding. It sure was quick and I found Aaron and I shooting every second. I think there were more photos than the actual length of the ceremony.

I loved that everyone went right outside and were ready to take photos. Their family and friends were done in 15 minutes which left us about 40 minutes to play. Of course, I would have loved the whole day at Glenfoerd with just the two of them. There are so many amazing photo spots and the two of them were so easy going.

Megan really captured the 1940's style with her dress, veil, decor and venue that I wanted their photos to reflect that era as well.

Thank you Megan and Matt and the rest of the family for having me share in your special day! May these photos remind you of the joy and love you have with each other.

Gorgeous, elegant and so much fun. Just some of the words to describe Megan and Matt and their fab wedding this weekend at Glenfoerd. What a way to start the wedding season.

Matt is shy but oh so SWEET and Megan is so much fun! The moment I met Megan and Matt, I knew I loved them. As Megan described her ideas for Glenfoerd and their wedding, I got really excited and was thinking, "Please pick me, pick me, pick me" After talking with Megan, she was thinking "I hope Sofia wants to do our wedding."

Chestnut Hill TV and SLife Productions

If you haven't heard of SLife productions you need to check them out.
I discovered them when they hired me to do maternity photos and photos of the entire family during the holidays. Jason is the owner and producer and he has done some really great documentary work on the Philly Jazz scene.

Jason and Slife just started a weekly tv show about Chestnut Hill and the community. The first two episodes are awesome; featuring Drake's Catering. They have a gorgeous garden to eat lunch in and tasty food to eat there or take home. You have to check them out.

The other episode talks about our very own "Big Dig". If you have made it out here, you may have noticed a ton of construction on Germantown Ave between Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill. The show does a great job of talking about the impact on the surrounding businesses. This construction shows how important it is to have word of mouth and loyal customers. The loyal customers are helping these businesses stay afloat by going often and really pushing friends and family to do the same.

So make sure you remember your favorite businesses and support them. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell strangers. Tell anyone who will listen.

One of my favorite and most beautiful clients from last year was Valerie and Andy. Their wedding was absolutely elegant and she did a gorgeous job. This photo is one of my favorites from the wedding because it screams Valerie and Andy. Valerie is super relaxed and a ton of fun. She is always laughing and being silly. Andy on the other hand is much quieter, camera shy and just sits back and watches Valerie. They compliment each other really well. Andy does let loose but keeps it close to the vest until he really gets to know you. And you can cajole him into doing anything.

I asked Valerie for some tips on planning such a fabulous affair and she said, " bad vendors create bridezillas". I couldn't agree more. If you pick great vendors with strong reputations and absolutely love them then on the day of the wedding you will not have to stress. Of course, you need to realize that you hired professionals and let them do their job.

She had jaw dropping invitations. whimsical, elegant and color-coordinated with everything. She said Robin of Robin K Design worked with her to get everything coordinated without being to matchy matchy. The perfect touch of elegance.

Donna from Beautiful Blooms did the flowers. They were amazing. Donna really worked to coordinate the flowers and linens to the invitations and make sure the centerpieces fit the grand ballroom. If you have ever been to the gold ballroom at the Hotel DuPont, you know how gihugic it is. Donna and her assistants worked really hard to have the tables set up early so that we could get awesome photos for Valerie. It was really important to her.

Her band, Quake from Brandywine Valley Talent, did an amazing job. Because Valerie is Jamaican, Quake learned a bunch of traditional reggae songs so that her family would feel more at home. They also looked out for us and made sure we always knew what was coming next. I love when the band tells me that we have 5 minutes before parent dances or cake cutting. True professionals realize that we are all there for the couple and love when the band makes sure we can do our job well.

Valerie also hired Erin Proud, Proud to Plan, for day of coordination. Valerie knew that she did not want to worry about all the details on her wedding day. Valerie spent 21 months planning. She didn't need to plan on the day too. Erin made everything run smoothly. Things were on time. The placecards were arranged perfectly. Valerie's crinoline ripped as she ran out of the church and Erin was there to help rip it out of the dress so we could do photos. Valerie said it was one of the best choices she made so she could relax on her wedding day. BTW, Valerie is the corporate event planner for the Hotel DuPont so she does this kind of thing for a living. If you are like most, I'd get a planner first thing to help you with everything from picking a reception site to laying out table cards.

Two things happened to Valerie that should never happen to a bride. Her original make-up artist did not adhere to her make-up vision going for Spice Girl as opposed to elegant girl. Luckily, Valerie did a trial run prior to the big day and discovered the problem and was able to find an amazing make-up artist. He was also very cute. sorry girls he's married. The other thing that happened: her first photographer went awal! Valerie called me a month before the wedding. We met, we booked and we ran out and did their GTKY session. The "Get to Know You" session is such a great time for me to get to know the couple and for them to get to know me. Her friends, family and even Val and Andy felt so relieved when they saw their GTKY session. They realized everything happens for a reason and that their wedding would be perfect and documented perfectly. We even designed and printed a GTKY guestbook in less than 2 weeks. Everyone loved seeing the photos and sharing thoughts of the couple.

Finding great vendors is the key to success. Finding vendors that want to know your vision and help execute your vision is so important. On your wedding day, you want to relax. You want to feel like you are in good hands. So do your homework, prioritize and get what you really want. It is worth the extra costs and planning.

Chivalry does not always pay.... or does it?

I have some of the best couples. This story comes from one of my favorite weddings of last year. Marisa had the most gorgeous flowers and coolest tables. I can not tell you how many brides call me about her flowers and ask who her florist was. So, for everyone who wants to know: Ilonka Comstock . She did some wonderful unique and contemporary arrangements and Marisa said she was fabulous to work with.

Marisa and Pete met in New York during the blizzard of 2003 with 2 feet of snow on the ground. Her best friend and roommate threw a holiday party at their apartment. Being from Upstate New York, Pete, a coworker of her friend, showed up and they had a great night partying. Later in the night, as everyone headed out to the bars, Pete attempted an act of chivalry by picking her up to carry her over the mounds of snow so she wouldn't get soaked. Well, he happened to drop her, spraining his knee and leaving her with a big bump on her head, but they laughed so hard that night about it, and still laugh about it today!

Her tips for other brides:

She loved how her cathedral veil looked but it was really heavy and a huge pain to wear. If she had known it was such a hassle she would have never worn it.

They had all of their guests sign a custom designed serving tray. They use it all the time for entertaining and all the special notes remind them of everyone dear to them.

An ice cream bar is fabulous on a hot day. In the middle of June, everyone loved having something cold and refreshing.

Appleford! It is rustic but a blank slate and was able to accommodate their elegant, modern feel. Guests loved being able to go outside and hit the martini bar and come under the tent for dancing. It really integrated the outdoors and made the day relaxed and elegant. They hung glass lanterns in the trees which gave light to the outdoors with a nice romantic, twinkle effect.

Roll with the punches. The Rolls Royce wouldn't start on the way to the church but we just jumped in the bridal party limo and was only a few minutes late. Walking down the aisle and seeing Pete smiling at her made everything worth it.

Have a morning after brunch, so that you can sit and relax with all of your friends and family and share in the experience of the previous day. They had people from 19 states attend so seeing everyone for the whole weekend was great.

Franck Muller and the G lounge

Last week, I photographed a VIP event for Govberg Jewelers at the new fabulous G Lounge. The G Lounge is downstairs from Davios on 17th and Chestnut Street. I not only got into the mogul room but took tons of photos. But I'll keep the suspense alive and not post any of those. It is that time of year again! February 23, 2008 was the 16th anniversary of Shut Up and Dance. A one night performance by the dancers of the Pennsylvania Ballet to raise funds for MANNA. I absolutely love capturing this show every year. I get to visit my old love, dancing, and test my instincts and photo skills in capturing all of the fabulous dancers. As always, the show was fantastic.

A few weeks ago, I asked all of my brides to give me their story and a little insight into their planning process. I have to say I have some of the coolest brides around. They have such sweet stories and some of the planning is pretty funny. They of course all had great tips so I will be sharing those stories and tips from past brides to help all of you future brides. Plus other ideas to have fabulous photos and fabulous weddings.

This is Becky and Matt's story. Aaron, my associate photographer, actually captured their big day. He said they were one of the nicest and sweetest couples he ever photographed. He could see the genuine affection and love they have for each other. I LOVE THAT!! I love when I meet a couple and can just SEE their love. That connection makes my job worth it. The photographs just reflect that. That is one thing I look for when meeting my couples. I want the couples who have a great interaction with each other. I have more for another post....back to Becky and Matt.

In Becky's words:
"I met Matt when I was teaching Kindergarten and working as a reading aide in the afternoons. Matt was a special education teacher, working with autistic and emotionally disturbed children. I immediately thought he was cute, and I loved watching him with his students. He was so patient and so creative. I worked with a few of Matt's students in a small reading group, and looked forward to going to his classroom every day. April of that school year (actually on April Fool's Day) we were at a happy hour and I kissed him! That was the start of our relationship! Now, we both teach at the same school - Matt is still teaching special education, and I teach first grade.
After 6 months of dating, we moved in together. And after a while he surprised me with a ring. I had actually planned a surprise weekend away in a cabin with some of our friends for Matt's birthday. It was a great time, and at the end of the weekend, our friends had all left and we had packed up our car. That's when Matt asked me to be his wife - I had never been so happy! That was in February of 2007 and we married in August of 2007. So the planning was a little stressful, trying to figure everything out in 6 months. But Matt was so involved in helping to make the decisions. It really was fun. We really don't have any good stories from the planning process. But our actual wedding day was a fairy tale. We got married at the Old Mill, outside in the perfect weather. We were so lucky, but I think even a downpour wouldn't have bothered us that day!
We absolutely loved working with Aaron and share our pictures with everybody! We have also shared the sneak peak slideshow you put together for us. It is one of my favorite things about our wedding day. It just reminds me of how happy we were that day.
We are looking forward to this August when we will celebrate our one year anniversary and welcome our first baby Loney!!! "

Tom Tallitsch CD released today

Many of you may remember the photo shoot I did for Jazz Saxophonist, Tom Tallitsch.

Today the CD, Medicine Man, is released and it received a phenomenal review by John Barron of All About Jazz. Part of why I am so excited is that my husband, Victor Baker, is the guitarist on the CD. He also composed several tracks. Here is some of what John Barron said, "...Tallitsch blows his tenor with confidence, at times hearkening the vibrancy of Joe Henderson...Baker's lyrical lines, ..., are highly original, and refreshingly void of typical guitar trappings. Philly Photographers at Waterworks Restaurant

Once a month, I lead a wedding photographers group here in Philly. I always learn so much from everyones input. This month, thanks to geoff's idea, I pulled together a panel of other vendors to come and share with us. We had over 30 photographers show up. We also had some cool vendors sponsor prizes such as Pictage, Triple Scoop Music and Bludomain! Waterworks Restaurant donated some yummy snacks and their fabulous room.

We joined together to discuss how to improve the client's experience and how we can improve the industry in general.

The biggest thing to come out of the meeting was communication. Communicate with your clients and vendors. BTW, it is better to call them your partners. It sounds nicer.

So, brides, make sure you give us a list of your vendors as soon as they are booked. If we can communicate with the caterer, the venue, the planner and know the timeline. We can tweak where necessary and also help manage your expectations. If you want to make cocktail hour and have a list of 60 groups. We can manage those expectations. We can let the caterer know that it may take an extra 15 minutes or we can let you know that we have to get to the venue earlier.

Let us know about the videographer. if we can talk with them before and prep each other then you won't end up with a videographer in every ceremony photo. Because we'll discuss with them before hand how it is going to work.

Your wedding professionals are also a wealth of information. They can give you guidance with other vendors. Most of us do at least 40 events a year if not more and we meet lots of people. We know how things work and can really guide you with timing, vendor referrals, lighting suggestions, etc.

Communicate. Tell us what you want, what you envision and then trust us to make it happen. If we know who we are working with then everything will run smoother. Everyone can do their job and our number one priority is you.

In December I sat down with my friend, Geoff and he mentioned this seminar that I should attend. I was really excited to see creativity and business from a different point of view. I find that I become so saturated by my own industry that I don't always look outside it for inspiration. So I went to this seminar and I feel changes happening. It talked about new ways of thinking and how you can make your own reality. I met some really amazing people. It was three days of intense examination and it just really cleared the way for approaching life differently. I haven't felt that much inspiration; since I sat in Central Park reading the Artist's Way and talking with other passionate people. I got affirmation. I had a cheering section. I had people who asked me what I really need. Not just what I think I want but what I really need.

The biggest thing I took away from the seminar is: I make my own way. I have control over my destiny. I can make a change. Change starts with me. That there is only ME and no one else is me and therefore if I am not me then no one else will be.

Two of my favorite quotes are :“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly. To keep the channel open.” -Martha Graham

Since that seminar, I have gone out on a limb. I laugh when I walk into my office because I have pink post-its all over the wall. But it is my reminder of what I really want. By knowing what I want, I can then take those steps toward that. It becomes this what I want and then I just move there. When I think about it to much, I get overwhelmed. But when I just focus on what needs to be done, it happens.

When I was a dancer there was no question. I knew what I wanted, I knew what I needed. I got up everyday and moved toward that goal, that passion.

As I look more and more at photography as a business and a way to support my family, i find myself forgetting about the passion. When I am photographing something, I find that passion. That need to connect with others, to find something in them to share. This seminar made me realize what is important and if I concentrate on that then my passion will open up new doors. Will make changes.

I have some really awesome things coming up. Some great shoots, cool projects, exciting partnerships and new friendships. I think this is the year of change. Not just for me but the whole country, the whole world.

I had dinner tonight with a really amazing person. I sat down and listened to what he had to say and it reminded me of the late nights of sitting in New York with my best girlfriends and talking about life. about art. about passion. We talked about how one person can make a change. one can make a difference. one person can speak to many.

I think that is what artists do everyday. That is what I hope that my photography does for my clients. I hope that I have touched you in such a way that it has changed you. made you see something about you, or your life or your family or friends.

My last fun Tuesday

I always spend Tuesdays and Thursdays with Allie especially since I end up working lots of weekends. But yesterday was our last Tuesday together because I need more days in the office or on shoots. I am sad but know that Allie will love being at school another day with her friends. So in honor of our girls days out we took some photos.

Volunteering for MANNA

As you know, I photograph a bunch of stuff for MANNA including Shut Up and Dance and Chef Aid. I love the people who work there and love what they do. MANNA is getting ready to renovate their facility so they can feed even more people and do it 7 days a week. So, when the call went out that they had to make 80,000 meals in the next two months, I organized a group of local photographers to help out. We went over on Friday and had a great time. So much fun, we'll probably go again.

2008 People to Watch

Last week, I photographed Philadelphia Magazine's 2008 People to Watch Party. Run out and grab a copy of the mag if you haven't received it yet. The people in there are amazing and the photos are awesome. I love the red backgrounds in the photos.

One of my favorites was Barette Vance. I always love to hear about dancers who have overcome all odds to continue dancing. Read her story, it will make you think twice about whining the next time you stub your toe. I have also had the privilege of photographing her the last two years in Shut Up and Dance. Amazing facility and I would never have guessed she was dancing after an injury. As Richard Rys writes, "When she practiced for the first time after surgery and couldn’t complete the most natural moves, it was like she’d forgotten how to breathe." I know that feeling from a back injury I had 15 years ago. It was minor compared to her injury but I still had 3 months of physical therapy and retraining.

It is about the journey

I love yoga! Over the years I have taken yoga off and on but last year we joined a gym and I try to go 3-4 times a week. I absolutely love all the teachers. It's interesting because out of all the different places I have taken yoga, the teachers at the gym have been the most connected to the "practice".

Today, Sophie kept reminding us to check in with our breath and feel what it was doing. How it felt when we took the inhale and the exhale. What did it do to our bodies and our mind? She also emphasized that it is the journey not the end that is the goal. I like that alot. It is about being in the moment and experiencing where you are and taking that moment further, building on that, improving on that and growing. Just being in the moment and not judging but taking the feedback and concentrating on improving it. Maybe yesterday we could touch our toes but today we can only get to our shins. Instead of saying, "you suck" or forcing yourself to do what you have done before; check in with your body, feel what it is doing, and pick something to change. Usually they tell you to breathe because when you are stressed your breathing become tight and restricts many things.

So, taking this philosophy with you into everyday life. Don't judge, just be. Just look at where you are, where you would like to be and move towards that goal. Enjoy the journey, check in with each step. It is how you learn from your mistakes- try it, see how it works, change something and move on. Don't dwell, don't force, don't second guess; just be in the moment.

Have a marketing idea. Try it, see what happens. Look at what you are doing and check and see if it is working, if you are progressing. If not, why? What can you do to make it better?

Enjoy the process as much as your goal! and make sure you keep moving forward, push yourself to go a little further and when you get scared or stopped then check in. look at yourself and figure out what is behind the block. If nothing else breathe!

New Year New You!

This time of year brings about lots of resolutions and I am no different. A big resolution is to lose all the baby weight that I gained and never lost. I even think I have gained weight since Allie was born. So, I am hoping that all of you will join me in my challenge. A few have already joined in. I'll check in with everyone, share tips, stories and progress. At the end of March we'll all meet up and pick a winner based on their fitness goals and how close they got to them in relation to everyone else. The winner will get a free sassy portrait session.

So to kick things off, Allie has developed her first fitness video. If anyone tries her moves let me know how effective they are.

Philly Photographers holiday party

I am the leader for the Philadelphia PUG- it is the Pictage user group- which is a bunch of photographers that meet once a month and talk about business, the industry, do shoots and just hang out. I have some of the most awesome couples ever. Saturday I went out with Katie and Matt for their GTKY session. We had such a blast. We met up at the River Rink, yes I went ice skating and did photos at the same time. It was a little scary because if I fell it would be the most expensive fall ever. But I managed to stay on my feet and get some fun stuff. We even skated a bit without the camera. Much more relaxing even though I haven't skated in like 15 years, its like riding a bike.

Then we wandered along Liberties Walk. Very cool little spot and found the most amazing store, Delicious. They have been making corsets for 15 years and opened their store 2 years ago. If you are into corsets or just fun clothes you have to check it out. And you have to see the old carnival theme.

Katie and Matt were such a joy and just agreed to do anything I asked. I love couples that just play.

Holidays and the importance of community

I love the holidays and the Ritz does it right. They have a huge tree right in the middle of the lobby and a cool life size gingerbread house. Families come from all over to gawk at the enormous tree. They also have a hot chocolate sommelier. OMG, someone after my own heart!

Anyway, I second shot a wedding the weekend after Thanksgiving with another photographer at the Ritz. Hence why I actually had time to visit. But I came early to meet with a couple who is looking for a photographer. They were amazed that I was actually working with the "competition" and that I liked doing it. "Well aren't you worried people are going to see your work and think he did it?" "Don't you think that helps your competition excel" Um yeah!! to the second question. I hope that the really good photographers do excel because it makes us all look good, there are enough weddings to go around and the couples get great photos.

I love photographing with other photographers. I get to see how they work, I have no pressure so I can play all day with my camera, fabulous gorgeous couples and awesome places. How can that be bad? We both get to learn from each other. It is also just a good time working with friends.

When we start looking at other photographers as colleagues instead of "the evil competitiors" everyone grows. We see new ways of looking at things, we inspire each other to do better and we give support and encouragement. We build new pathways. We are photographers of people because we like people. We like the interaction, the beauty, the essence of what makes each person unique. What if Einstein never shared his ideas?

Our client benefits the most from our sharing. So get out there, shoot with someone else, take someone to lunch, call up someone you admire and see if you can do something for them.

The holidays are for giving and sharing.

It snowed!

Well it was the first snowfall in Philly and Allie was super excited. First she stood in the windowsill with daddy and then she just grabbed her stool and watched it for a long time. Not much snow covered the ground but it was enough for a two year old.

A few months back I did a fabulous maternity session for the Fifields. Daphne already has a little boy who is Allie's age. We went to Daphne's parent's house which happens to be in my neighborhood. We had so much fun! She was willing to do anything and everyone was super psyched about them. Because of that session, her mom scheduled a family portrait session the Sunday after Thanksgiving. She had the whole family in town, except Daphne's bro and we tore it up on their red couch. I love when people think out of the box or in this case out of the house.

Jackie and Ron, Sofitel Hotel

Jackie and Ron were so fun to photograph. In fact most of my couples are really fun. I am so glad for that. Anyway, Jackie does not stop laughing and she has the biggest most beautiful smile I have ever seen. Ron is very sweet and a little more quiet but I think he compliments her really well. Although, I learned about some of his antics from friends during their rehearsal dinner.

Jackie and Ron had a very intimate ceremony and reception at the Sofitel with their best friends and family. I loved how small and personal it was. And we had plenty of time for fun photos of them.

Stef and Justin, Talamore Country Club

I had so many great weddings in the last few months and did not have a chance to blog about them. So here are all of my catch up posts.

Stef and Justin were fabulous. I didn't meet them until their "get to know you" session and knew that they were going to be a lot of fun. And when I walked in the door on their wedding day, I knew that this crowd was beyond fun. Everyone was goofing around. I don't think anyone stopped laughing throughout the entire day. Halloween has been very exciting. Actually the whole month has been halloween for Allie. Almost everyday she wore her costume or slept in her costume. Allie was really looking forward to wearing her costume to school.

We went trick or treating and Allie had lots of fun going to everyone's house. She wanted to go in the houses too but had to settle for looking through the door and windows. We even saw a scary guy! But he went away. Allie was also excited to see Zombies on the lawn of one house. "I like Zombies!" she exclaimed

This family weekend stuff is the bomb! So today we carved our pumpkin. it was Allie's first and she thought it was really cool. She even helped me clean out its guts although she didn't like how slimy it was. But she was really excited when we cooked the seeds and ate them. Here are a few pics. I am starting to breathe a little easier because I have no more weddings for the season. But I have a ton of back-end work. Organizing, backing up weddings, designing albums, redoing the website, incorporating new software, the list goes on and on.

Today I decided to make cookies with Allie. I am so glad I get to spend my weekends with her again. It is awesome! Although she kept trying to eat the raw cookie dough it was a pretty fun time. Here are some photos...

New York's Meatpacking District

Today I spent all morning in the meatpacking district photographing a CD cover. A cool jazz musician, Tom Tallitsch, on Origin Records is putting out a new CD. We just wandered all around finding little crevices, side streets and neat buildings to use for backdrops. We had a total blast and I can't wait to come to this part of town and shoot again.

I am in New York this week and here is what I was up to yesterday. I photographed ISES NY. A great event with event planners, rental companies, entertainment companies etc. The event was at the Xchange which was a really cool venue. Gorgeous views and wide open space. Thanks to my great friend, Jen Manuele I have been tagged by the blog tag chain letteresque thing going around where you have to tell 8 things about yourself that not many people know...so here are 8 things about me:

1. As a child I used to dress up like Diana Prince and spin around and strip down to my wonder woman bathing suit, red galoshes, rope and yellow tiara.

2. "Do ya think I'm Sexy", by Rod Stewart, was my favorite song as a child. In fact, I had 3 of his albums and would wear a sequined leotard that I had, put on one of the records and dance around for hours. I also did this with Saturday Night Fever, Donna Summers, Michael Jackson and Prince.

3. I used to sit for hours taping myself reading the interviews that I found in my muppet magazines, I even did the voices of each muppet or star doing the interview

4. I always wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer

5. I am always freezing. Once it hits 60, I have to whip out the winter coat. When I was a kid I used to put on my bathing suit, my winter coat and my boots and go out and ride my bike...in the summer!

6. I absolutely love puerto rican/cuban and mexican food. If I could eat plantains, salsa, rice and beans and tacos everyday. I would. I am always on the lookout for good authentic puerto rican food and think it is the one cuisine that is seriously lacking in most places.

7. I can't sit still. I always have to have a foot tapping, leg shaking, or hip twisting.

8. In the 6 years, I danced and lived in NY, I lived in Long Island, in 4 different apartments on the upper west side, 5th and A in the East Village, Grand Street in Brooklyn, Jamaica Queens and Astoria in Queens. I basically moved where the rent was cheap and could find a sublet. I also worked in 9 different restaurants and about 100 temp jobs all over the city the life of an artist in New York. =)

Lauren and Matt, New York City Session

Lauren and Matt were so much fun. Lauren and I got to know each other because she was one of the event planners at Philly Mag and she was also at Sara and Dave's wedding. Lauren also knows my hubby because she used to work at a restaurant that he played at. Small world....

We tried looking for the rock in Central Park that Matt proposed and we think we found it. haha, Matt planned on proposing at the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center but it was to packed so they took a stroll towards Central Park and Matt stopped a few hundred feet in and dropped to one knee. He couldn't wait anymore. Plans for a sushi dinner were changed to a glass of champagne and a quick trip home to share the news with Lauren's family....I don't know-I think I would have done sushi first.
